January Round-up

New Year, New Plates – Fresh starts and first bites for 2026

Newsletter January Round-up

Fellow Foodie,

Well, we're nearly through what many call the most depressing month of the year. I do understand why – especially if you're attempting dry January. I've never attempted it, and my excuse is that my birthday is in January, so I celebrate reaching another year older. Crikey, I'm racking up the years now.

So what have I been up to? For my birthday I was treated to a visit to Starling – my second visit and another superb lunch with lots of highlights. Nick Bearshaw is a talented chef.

My venison main at Starling, Esher

I managed to squeeze in 4 days in Funchal, Madeira – one of my favourite places – with sunshine and lots of good food, including my first visit to the excellent Armazém do Sal restaurant (highly recommended), lunch at the delightful Portuguese-themed Bistro Pau de Lume, and as always when in Funchal, a visit to Marisqueira O Barqueiro for the best seafood platters in town.

Madeira-winter sun & great food

Only one new review on the website this month, and what a cracker: Sunday lunch at the Guinea Grill. If you're looking for a traditional Sunday roast, the "Guinea" is for you. Click here to view.

Sunday Lunch at the “Guinea”

Sadly, I was due to review Brother Marcus, but I picked up a nasty bug last week and had to postpone, hopefully I can visit next month.

Over the Christmas holidays I have also been busy in the kitchen, adding no less than four recipes to the website, including my take on classic winter warmers: Beef Bourguignon, Lancashire hotpot, and my creamy fish pie recipe, all easy to cook and prepare but great recipes for this time of year.

Did you recieve any cookbooks for Christmas? I was luckey enough to receive two, the bestseller Padella, pasta recipes from the restaurant of the same name. The second a one pot recipe book from Tim Wilson founder of the Ginger Pig butchers in Borough market. I can see me cooking recipes from both books, some might even appear on the website in the future, what this space!

For wine lovers, I also received a lovely book called Thirsty by Tom Gilbey. It's full of funny stories, but more importantly, Tom cuts through all the pretension surrounding wine and writes about it in a way that actually makes sense to normal people like me – well, normal-ish. You get what I mean-Ha Ha

Christmas books

As it's January and if like me your bank account is requiring some much-needed love and attention, please check out our extended special lunch deals section with some fantastic offers from across central London.

Big news from Oxfordshire as Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons announces Raymond Blanc's successor. End of an era.
